Annuals - 5 Easy To Grow Flowers

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Michael Russell Annuals are a great addition to any garden. There are many varieties to choose from and many are easy to grow. Annuals flower all summer long, many until frost. Here are five of the most popular, long blooming annuals. 1. Geraniums. Technically a Pelargonium, geraniums are hugely popular in gardens. They are very easy to grow, so are great for beginning and expert gardeners alike. In warmer climates, geraniums are perennials, but in much of the country, they are treated as annuals. They bloom from spring to frost. There are three types of geraniums: zonal, ivy and scented. The zonal geraniums are the most familiar. They have flower clusters which rise above soft, velvety leaves. The flowers come in colors of red, white, pink, violet and rose. This variety will generally grow twelve to eighteen inches tall. Ivy geraniums have branches that stretch out and droop, making them perfect for containers. The foliage is glossy and smooth. The ivy variety flowers come in pink, lavender, red and white. The scented geraniums are more grown for the fragrance than the flowers. Gently crush the foliage in your hands to release the scent. The fragrance can range from rose, to chocolate, to mint! These geraniums are best planted in containers where you can reach out and rub the foliage. 2. Petunias. Petunias come in such a wide variety of colors and types that it can be difficult to decide which one to pick! Petunias bloom from summer until frost and come in colors ranging from red, white, yellow, purple, pin and multi colored. The two main classes of petunias are multifloras and grandifloras. Multifloras are compact with smaller flowers. The flowers can be either single or double petaled. The grandifloras are the larger of the two classes, growing up to twenty four inches tall. This class is often used for hanging baskets or containers. The flowers can be single or double petaled. Remove the dead flower blooms in order to keep the petunias producing flowers all season. 3. Marigolds. Marigolds are the work horses of the garden. They are not fussy, very easy to grow right from seed and produce many flowers from spring to frost. The four common types of marigolds to use in your garden include: African, French, Triploid and Signet. African marigolds, which are also referred to as American marigolds are the tallest type. They grow up to 3 feet tall, with large double petaled blooms. Best used in the back of a border. Flower colors range from cream to orange with other yellow shades in the middle. French marigolds are smaller than the African. They grow six to twelve inches tall and have either single or double petaled blooms. Shades range from maroon, to orange to bright yellow and some bi-colored flowers. Triploid hybrids are a cross between the French and African varieties. The plants are a compact twelve inches with large three inch blooms. These are also a seedless variety, so will continue to bloom even without dead heading. Signets are the tiniest of the marigolds. They are bushy plants that grow up to twelve inches and produce masses of tiny colorful flowers. 4. Sunflowers. Sunflowers bloom in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes. Easily grown from seed, they are perfect to teach children about plants. From giant ten foot tall plants to compact garden varieties, there is sure to be a sunflower that will fit your garden. For the giant size, staking will probably be necessary to keep the flower from toppling over. Often times the flower head itself will grow to over twelve inches across! The garden varieties can have single large blooms on each stem, or be a more bushy plant with many smaller flower heads. If you want sunflowers for cutting, try growing the hybrids with a long single stem. 5. Snapdragons. Snapdragons are available in a wide variety of sizes and colors. They are difficult to grow from seed, so starting out with plants from your local nursery is the easiest way to add them to your garden. There are three typical sizes for snapdragons: dwarf, medium and tall. The dwarf size are twelve inches or shorter. They come in a wide range of colors, but due to their size, are not good for cutting. The intermediate size grows up to eighteen inches. This size is good for cutting flowers for bouquets and for using anywhere in the garden bed. The tall variety of snapdragons grow up to three feet tall. These will require staking to maintain straight stems. These are best to use for the back of the border, or for cutting. Planting annuals can be a great activity for the whole family. Using any of these annuals can provide months of blooms for cutting, or just enjoying in the garden! Marketing 101: Be a Volunteer

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Bette Daoust, Ph.D. Being available and being a volunteer have only one thing in common. They both require some of your time. You need to look at each request for your time to determine how you can best help. If you are too booked, you will not be able to avail yourself for any outside advice. Your calendar needs to include small snippets of time when you can be available; this will give you the flexibility to move some things around to accommodate the customer. Personally, I always leave Friday afternoons open. If a customer needs to have me on site Thursday afternoon and it is unexpected, I can move my Thursday work to that time slot. If nothing comes up during the week, I simply take some of my work load for the next week and get it done early. Invariably your time will get filled even if there is nothing scheduled. Volunteering to help a customer may not involve helping them with their projects. It may be that they are putting on an event that will bring other potential customers. These events could be such things as seminars, symposiums, or training programs. If they want your help, simply ask what they would like you to do. It may be that they want you as one of the speakers for the event or to put them in contact with an event planner you have used in the past. Always ask first and then make your decision. The biggest issue with being a volunteer is the balancing act you must perform to keep all of your projects on time and on schedule. Do not spread yourself too thin, keep on top of your calendar at all times. Bette Daoust, Ph.D. is a speaker, author (over 170 books, articles, and publications), and consultant. She has provided marketing, sales, business development and training expertise for companies such as Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Varian Medical Systems, Accenture, Avaya, Cisco Systems to name a few. Causes of Weight Gain

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Mary Mason-Shields Cellular telephones and computers have made communication very easy. There was a time that you only saw the wealthy or well-to-do individual with a cellular telephone. Nowadays, everybody has them. Everywhere you turn you see someone with a cellular telephone attached to his or her ear (or it seems to be attached). Before everyone had a cellular telephone, you would have to walk (or ride) to find a pay telephone to make a telephone call. Not anymore. You see people now with the telephones strapped to their sides, (when they are not talking on them). Why stop what you are doing to get up and make a telephone call, when you have a cellular telephone at your immediate disposal? If you dont want to talk to anyone, just send him or her a text message. Computers are everywhere. When computers were first invented, there were only personal computers that had to sit on a desk or table. Nowadays, we have laptop computers that go with us everywhere we go. No more posting a letter. Just send an email. No need to go to the post office to post a letter. You dont even have to buy a stamp. In order to gain control over our weight, we must start with realistic expectations. Rather than putting the entire focus on weight loss, we must look toward a healthier attitude when trying to gain control over our weight. A realistic goal for controlling our weight would be about ten pounds a month. With a diet and exercise program, this is a reachable target. We must remember that the weight did not appear all at one time, therefore, the weight will not disappear all at one time.Another deterrent in weight control management is the media. With all the hoopla regarding the many diet pills on the market, it is difficult to concentrate and focus on a healthy regime when trying to gain control over our weight. The media presents many ways of getting the perfect body shape and looks by proposing new diets that will work miracles, not to mention the exercise equipment that supposedly helps do the work for us. Deciding what to do to control our weight, we must weed through all the diet commercials and diet paraphernalia to find what will fit our needs. Researching the dozens of diet regimes on the market today takes plenty of concentration remembering what our specific needs are. While trying to gain control over our weight, we must adhere to two main factors, diet and exercise. Diet and exercise is the means for losing weight and toning up at the same time. The Modern Catholic

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Michelle Yau Admit it. When you hear that a young movie star or musician is a devout Catholic, you pause for a second; not because it is an extreme religion, but for exactly the opposite reason. Maybe it’s because we hear so much about actors and actresses changing religions more often than the seasons change, or perhaps it is because we expect them to be Scientologists or Kabbalahists or worship at the altar of “Cats Who Know How to Use the Remote Control.” For whatever reason, Catholicism just doesn’t seem like the religion of choice for the younger generation, but of course, statistics prove that wrong. After all, according to the 2004 editions of the Official Catholic Directory, the number of Catholics in the United States at the beginning of that year numbered over 67 million– a full 23% of the population and the largest religious following in the country. In fact, the Catholic Church isn’t only the largest religious body in the US, it is the largest in the world! With that many followers, they can’t all be the little old ladies that reluctant church goers follow for cues during Christmas and Easter masses. Please forgive me if my tone sounds irreverent because that certainly isn’t my intention. I’ve crossed the age barrier to be a 30-something Catholic. I am too old for my religion to be based on my parents taking me to church weekly (twice weekly when I attended Catholic school) and too young to be Catholic simply because I always have been. When I went to the hospital recently for minor surgery, I didn’t hesitate to respond “Catholic” when asked my religion. In fact, I built an entire business based mainly on selling Rosary bracelets and pocket Rosaries. Cynics may chalk that up to capitalism, but the fact is that I’m not branching out into red string bracelets, Buddhist Malas, or Islamic prayer strands, even if it would bring more sales. What drives me is my faith. Of course, there have been times when I couldn’t help but wonder if I actually fit into the Catholic mold, so to speak. After all, I have been divorced and remarried, and my husband now is the son of a Chinese Buddhist. We aren’t exactly your typical Catholic family. Then again, maybe we are exactly what typifies today’s Catholic. The United States has always been known as a melting pot and a place for religious freedom so it makes sense that Catholics are marrying outside of their religion. According to an article titled Interfaith Weddings: An Introduction by Reverend Deborah Stern Ross and Rabbi Roger Ross, more than 60 percent of Catholics under the age of 38 are married to non-Catholics. A 2004 study by the Barna Research Group sites the number of divorced Catholics as 25% while other sources show numbers as high as the national average- anywhere from 35-50% depending upon which statistics you believe. Maybe I “fit” more than it would seem on first glance. So what is today’s modern Catholic like? We are young and old. We are church goers and mass avoiders. We are lawyers and housekeepers. We are married, divorced, widowed, separated, and remarried. We are families in houses with white picket fences and 2.5 children, and we are single mothers trying to make ends meet. We struggle daily with teaching our children right from wrong, and we struggle daily with making the right choices ourselves. In short, we are like most people you come in contact with on a daily basis with one significant difference- we have a family of 67 million other flawed, stressed, faithful individuals who know what we believe. Secrets of a Successful Marketing Partnership

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Paul McCord I recently received an interesting e-mail from a gentleman in the UK asking if marketing partnerships really work. He had approached a number of potential partners and many expressed interest in forming partnership, yet nothing got done. There seems to be quite a bit of interest right now in marketing partnerships. It is about time. Businesses can set up and implement very successful partnerships, but the process is long-term. Partnerships do not generally produce significant results quickly. What A Marketing Partnership Is A marketing partnership involves two or more professionals, companies or salespeople who have common prospects, similar marketing needs, and possibly complementary services. These entities join forces for mutual marketing and sales, usually within a specific market sector or for specific prospects. This does not mean they lose their individual identity. More than likely, each will continue to market and sell outside the partnership. Marketing activities may involve: Creating joint marketing materials Joint direct mail, e-mail or advertising campaigns Joint sales calls Referring of prospects Possibly even combining services, talents and assets to create new services An example of a potential marketing partnership would be an accountant, estate attorney, financial planner, and insurance agent. By combining forces, these professionals can, at least in theory, coordinate and help guide an individuals affairs without the potential of conflict, jealousy, or competition. And, again, each individual professional benefits from wider exposure, more referrals, and marketing that is more efficient. Virtually every professional and company has opportunities to create marketing partnerships. Although the most visible partnerships involve large, publicly traded companies, partnerships offer tremendous potential for even the smallest of companies or single practitioners. What A Marketing Partnership Is Not A marketing partnership is neither a quick fix for sales problems, nor a way to eliminate the burden of marketing and sales. Although some marketing partnerships may be elaborate formal legal entities, most, especially with smaller companies and individual practitioners, are informal devices that enhance each partners marketing reach–their combined efforts allow both partners to meet prospects’ needs they may not have otherwise been able to meet individually. In a partnership both parties must assume responsibility for marketing the joint venture. A partner who expects to ride the back of the other partner will quickly find himself alone. When considering a partnership, there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Your Partners Help Define Your Reputation And Position When you enter a marketing partnership, whom you choose to join forces with directly impacts your sphere of influence, marketing potential and reputation. Each partners reputation “rubs off” on the other. In addition, your marketing reach is enhancedor limitedby the other side’s. Consequently, you should take care when approaching someone as a partner. As the initiator, you have the advantage of choosing providers you want to join forces with. Since the ball is in your court, pair with businesses that have the reputation you want for yourself and the market reach you desire. Careful selection of partners can rapidly establish a relatively new company or professional as an expert or serious player within their local industry. Likewise, poorly selected partners can just as quickly damage a reputation. 2. Partners Want Real Value From The Partnership When you initiate a marketing partnership, the professionals and companies you approach will want to see results before they become enthused. You will have to sell them on the idea that the partnership will produce real benefit for them, not just for you. In addition, they will not want a new free “soft” service to provide their customers. They will want a real profit benefit. So approaching them with the idea that they can refer a client with a need to you and thus provide a “service” to their client will not cut it. The partnership must offer them bottom-line dollars. Even then, they will not fully participate until they have experienced some benefit and see that it works. That means you must be prepared to give before you receive. 3. Your Commitment is Key As the initiator of the partnership, you not only have the luxury of approaching those potential partners you believe will enhance your status, reputation and business potential, but you also must assume responsibility for its success. You will have to do the vast majority of work, at least at first. You will be dealing with people who may like the concept and want it to work, but they will be skeptical. You will have to carry the ball and show them that you are committed to the partnershipand, again, that it will produce results. The quickest way to achieve full buy-in of partners is to have a client or two ready to go as soon as your partner prospect agree to the partnership. Nothing gets the attention of a new partner like immediate business–and it demonstrates that you are serious in your commitment to them and not simply looking to mooch off their business. Many, if not most, marketing partnerships fail to live up to their promise because the initiating partner forms the partnership with unrealistic expectations. If you are looking for a quick fix to sales problems, an “easy” way to get business, or are looking for a one-way referral connection, a marketing partnership is not the answer. Nevertheless, if you are committed to building a long-term partnership that can vastly increase the prospecting and marketing capabilities for all concerned–and eventually the sales pipeline–a well constructed marketing partnership can work wonders. Don’t Roll that Lawn

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Doug Green Every spring some mysterious hormone hits the male of the species and the urge to “do lawn work” strikes. One rite of spring is act of rolling the lawn. I’ve never been able to figure out why someone would roll a lawn; in my household, a lawn is for rolling on, not for being rolled. Many local homeowners, no doubt hormonally unbalanced by the passing of winter, like to go out and drag a heavy weight around the lawn. I recently read one newsletter that said the reason for rolling was to make sure the grass roots were in contact with the soil. Right, and I’ve got a bridge I can sell you. Grass roots, if properly grown, are quite deep and no amount of frost is going to throw them out of contact with the soil. The only thing rolling a lawn accomplishes is to compact the soil. Rolling the lawn compacts the soil squashing all the soil particles together. This means that air spaces necessary for good root growth are eliminated. It also means that water can’t penetrate the soil because there are no holes for it to move into. The bulk of the water runs off the lawn and never penetrates deep into the soil to the root zone level. This run off water takes the dissolving plant food with it so the spring feeding is washed down the sewer. In one fell swoop, rolling a lawn eliminates the necessary aeration, prevents water from entering and assists in the removal of spring applied fertilizer. I can’t think of an faster way to help put stress on a lawn than to roll the lawn first thing in the spring. The professionals at the Turfgrass Institute agree, rolling your lawn is poor start to spring. And you can get even more lawn information at Beginner-gardening.com Copyright 2005 Douglas Green. Cash Advance Company - How to Choose a Cash Advance Lender

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder Cash advance companies differ in how soon they deliver money, structure their fees, and process applications. To find a payday loan that best fits your needs, decide what you most want speedy money, low fees, or an easy application process. Then do a quick scan of lenders to find the best match. In just a few minutes, you can find the perfect cash advance company for you. Decide What Service You Most Want When you start looking for a lender, decide what you most want out of a payday lender. If you are looking for speedy cash in a matter of hours, expect to pay higher finance fees. However, if you are willing to wait a little longer or fax in some documentation, you can find lower fees for larger amounts. By prioritizing your needs, you can focus your search on payday loan lenders that are most relevant. In a few minutes, you can search for the company with the best delivery time, rates, or application process. The Differences In Lenders Online payday loan applications make for speedy loans, often processed in a matter of minutes. In general you will get your cash the next business day, but there are companies who process funds in less than an hour. These companies usually have higher fees since they have staff 24 hours a day. For the easy application process, go with a faxless program. That way you wont have to search for your pay stub or bank records. With databases, lenders are able to verify your application without paperwork. The lowest rates are usually found with lenders that require additional documentation. By having you fax in copies of your financial information, they reduce the risk of fraud and pass the savings onto you. Where To Search For Payday Loan Lenders With the internet, you can search for payday loan lenders from across the country. With so many choices, you can be sure to find the right company no matter where you live. Start with recommended lenders and look at their website for information on their loan program. Life is too Short, Don’t Have Regrets, Save your Marriage Today

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Terry Ross When we start out we have a very innocent outlook on life. Our vision of adulthood is seen through rose tinted glasses with freedom, money and the happy ever after in the forethought of our mind. When we are young we cant even comprehend how quickly life passes us by. Twenty five year olds are ancient, teachers have lived for ever and as for a grand parents we cant ever imagine being that old. As the years go by we soon realise that twelve months becomes shorter and shorter, no sooner does the summer start then its back to winter, Christmas and the cycle starts over again. Once you hit thirty those years just fly by, you get older quicker and quicker and you soon realise that life isnt everlasting. We are visitors on this planet for but a short period of time and if you keep on looking for that miracle way, way in the future you will miss the best part of your life. Realising how little time we have, puts a whole new perspective on life and makes you realise how precious life is. Now if you consider your relationship, do you really want to waste the best years of your life on failed relationships, one parent lifestyles and lonely nights? Save your marriage before it’s too late! Historically we didnt really have a choice. I always remember my Gran. She didnt have any real enjoyment in life, she just lived to serve her first husband and, once he died, her second. There was no give and take in either relationship neither husband believed she should have any enjoyment in life, in their eyes her sole aim in life was to wait on them hand and foot and just work like a slave. There was no decision to be made as to whether or not she wanted to save her marriage, marriage was for life. I worked with a guy once who believed that women should be no more than secretaries, if they worked at all, and that whenever he went home be it morning, lunch or night his meal should be ready and waiting!! Of course, times have changed, although that last example wasnt so long ago, and it is widely accepted that we no longer have to remain in relationships that are not working or if we dont feel like it. Marriage is no longer sacred to be clung on to no matter what but the disappointing change is that things have gone too far the other way with people giving up on relationships without a fight. I think the lesson we need to learn is that marriage is sacred but not at any cost. Life is very short and the grass is rarely greener on the other side. Always appreciate what you have got rather than setting your sites on a fairy tale. Marriage is a two way street, its all about give and take. Marriage is a changing target, like life, it is continually evolving and the ground rules keep changing but that doesnt mean that you cant learn to change with it. If you imagine the workplace the flexible workers, those who are prepared to learn and adapt to new processes and new ways of working are usually the ones who are successful. Marriage is the same. The most successful marriages are where partners learn to accept that times change, life doesnt stand still and if you want to get the best out of your relationship you need to adapt and move with the times. Don’t wait, if you believe your relationship is worth saving, act now and save your marriage. Help The Bride Plan Her Wedding

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Sher Matsen My daughter and fianc have finally set the big day but now comes the fun part of helping her plan her wedding. Now dont get me wrong, Im really looking forward to helping my daughter but stress can do crazy things to a woman. This could be a really fun experience if you look at the right way. Ill just sit back and do what Im told when Im told. In fact stress turns her into somewhat of a control freak. And controllers cant give up control of any aspect of their lives. They must always be in control, so the title control freak is rightfully earned. Now helping a control freak plan a wedding, can you imagine, after all everything is going to have to be perfectly controlled. Anything gone wrong is liable to land in quite a burst of verbal displeasure. Now as the helper you have some choices. You can either step back and find the situation quite amusing and thus keep your sanity. Or you can get drug into the chaos and panic and loose your sanity. Im opting for the amusing approach. Watching a control freak plan their wedding is rather like watching a juggler with about 12 extra balls. Your just waiting for one to drop! And eventually one will and all you can do is be their to pick up the pieces. It all began with choosing the perfect date. Now a sane person would wonder what does a perfect date look like, but a control freak spends hours going through each month and each date listing the pros and cons until they are satisfied they have found the perfect date. God help us all if the weather decides to not co-operate. But thats okay after a few stressful day my control freak daughter has decided that August 16th 2006 will be a perfect day. To the sane person it will be a perfect day no matter what goes wrong, but to my control freak daughter all I can hope is that the day is truly perfect in every way! Well our next mission was the gown and if you have never shopped with a control freak you will not understand how amusing this can be. At least from the view point Ive chosen to take. Grant it some moments are enough to make your hair stand up and shout Stop youre driving me crazy. A couple of deep breaths and the amusement returns. A normal soul will know that there is no such thing as the perfect wedding dress or the perfectly fitted wedding dress right off the rack. Yes a wedding dress can become perfect but it may take some alterations. Shopping for that wedding gown with a control freak leads to comments such as the sleeves are too puffy, the train slides just a little to the right, the v neck is from perfect, the ..Well you get the picture. They are looking for perfect by definition in their brain. Many of the gowns my daughter tried on were perfect as far as I could tell. She looked beautiful, breathtaking, and sexy all the things a bride should be. But to her it was not perfect. As luck would have it one bridal show as she shifted through the gowns this beautiful dress jumped out at her. When she tried it on it fit her perfectly and not only by my definition but by her own. Not an alteration needed, not a tuck, not a hem. It was infact perfect. So you see even the control freak can find a perfect gown. Our last adventure was in locating the perfect place for a reception. My control freak daughter has yet to find the place that makes her feel safe and in control. Thankfully she still has time and as luck goes Im certain we will find that perfect place. Im sure theyll be plenty more highlights before she has her wedding planned. The message here is not to make fun or chastise the control freak, after all we all have our faults, but rather to point out that no matter how stressed you become while planning your wedding it will all come together. Besides I believe every future bride turns into a bit of a control freak when planning her wedding. So control freak are not you dont have to settle for anything less than your definition of perfect and with some shopping youll be able to find it for a price within your budget. Just remember that your wedding will be perfect just because it is your special day!
